Enriched extension activities & community services are integrated in the curriculum of Master of Social work programme.
In addition to NSS, Exnora, Redcross, Rotaract wings of the college, we have embarked in an outreach programme Village Adoption since last seven years.
Village Adoption - An outreach Programme
The unique outreach programme of the college is village adoption programme through which students use their
knowledge, skills and abilities to benefit the local village community in a village Panayapuram in the neighborhood of the college.
The College has completed two major research projects under the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi, for the 1) "Promotion of Entrepreneurial development among SC/ST & Women through Cultivation, Value addition, Product development and Marketing through Self Help Group Approach" 2) . Under these schemes one Aloevera extractor and Filter unit at the cost of Rs.10.00 lakhs, one freeze drier at the cost of Rs.2.80 lakhs and one Plant Pulverizer at the cost of 0.15 lakh have been purchased by the institution.
The department of life science has created awareness among the rural community of the village on the cultivation of Aloe Vera, Patchouli, Vincarosea and Cissus Quadrangular is.
Villagers take a lot of interest in Aloe and cultivate aloe in their fields using bio farming methods and a demo unit of Vermi compost plant has also been installed. The villagers and SHG members were trained on the technology of extraction of Aloe juice and on the preparation of finished raw juice added with standard stabilizer and preservative. Juice extraction technology and the preparation of health drink are imparted to the villagers, so as to help them to enhance their income. Training was also given on knowhow and marketing techniques of this standardized and validated Herbal Health Drink.
The marketing strategies of the raw and finished aloe juice are developed and sustained by the cell and a marketing tie-up with Ramana Health Care, Tiruchirappalli and JC Herbals, Chennai is made feasible. The villagers and SHG members of the Pannayapuram village are the beneficiaries reaping the benefit out of marketing aloe juice to industries.
Consultancy Cell
Under the banner of this cell, Quarterly Farmers' Meet are organized to discuss the importance of cultivation of medicinal plants using modern farming techniques and commercialization of herbal raw materials. The cell members are also engaged in extending consultancy services to a land lord Mr.Nandhakumar for raising inter crops in his fields.
Triple I (III) Project - A Scool Adoption Programme
We have initiated another ambitious extension activity , in parallel, called "inclusion". Including children of neighboring schools to the arena of higher education. This novel project is named as Triple-I (INSPIRE, INCLUDE & INTEGRATE)
Under this "Triple-I" (Inspire, Include and Integrate) project the college has adopted three schools in the vicinity for a period of five years to reduce dropout rates & to foster interest in the students to pursue higher education and inculcate life values and health care.
